Have you ever come back to your computer to find one of these images has taking over? If so, it is Windows Updates. Stop! Don’t Touch! Walk Away!

So what are Windows Updates? Windows Updates are a combination of software patches and improvements to make your computer function better, be more secure from threats from hackers, malware, and security flaws. Basically it helps to keep your computer running smoothly and secure from threats up to the point.

The pain points

  • Windows Updates is not known for being a quick update. It is not unusual for a random update to take 1, 5, 15, 30 minutes or even longer to complete. 
Windows Updates can crash if there is a problem, a user tries to interrupt it, or someone or something (dogs, cats, and other pets) is clicking the mouse or keyboard or touchscreen.  

If you came back to the computer to find one of the above screens? 

  • Take a picture of the message and restart the computer. If it comes back immediately or it is frequently happening contact IT and send them the picture(s).

Tips

While your IT team has remotely been managing Windows Updates for you, it is a good habit to force Windows Updates to happen periodically to ensure you have everything and to reduce the wait time for Windows Updates. To force Windows Updates to start:
Click on Start > Setting (the Cog or Gear) > Update and Security to see the updates. You can also click on Search and start typing Windows Update.  Once you start it, close the window and continue working. When you are done with the computer click restart or shutdown to get Windows to finish the installation.

To avoid problems with Windows Updates or the feeling that the update is taking way to long. 

Make sure the computer is on, plugged in and the computer is connected to the network (Internet) and then do one of the following

  • Start it and walk away

  • Start it when you are done using the computer for the day

  • Start it and turn in for the evening

When you come back hours or days later click restart once or twice to confirm it is done.
