Google Drive: How to add a file to Drive

Google Drive: How to add a file to Drive

We're going to walk through how to move documents from Google Docs and Word to your Google Drive labeled "My Drive". Throughout this instructional there will be mention of Drive for Desktop, a piece of software that is used for Google Drive where work products from G Suite are automatically updated and stored in My Drive. You can access this in Windows 10 by clicking start > search "Drive" > open program.

If you don't have Drive for Desktop, download it here.

With MS Office products, we still have to manually upload these files into Drive. The video guide below has more context on what File Stream does for you as well as visual guides on adding work products between G Suite & MS Office.

All instructions are applicable to web browsers Chrome, Edge and Firefox.

Video Guide:

This example is on a Mac, but the process shouldn't be any different with another PC when uploading a document to Drive.

Google Docs

The quickest and easiest way to upload a file to Drive is having File Stream on you computer, having it takes these steps out of the process completely.

If you don't have Drive for Desktop yet, you can add files manually:

1. In the top of your document click Move

2. A new window will prompt you to move the document into a folder on "My Drive". Create or select an existing folder. For this example, we'll create a folder.

3. Label folder > Hit Enter/Return > Click Move here

After completion, go to your Drive (drive.google.com) > My Drive

You can see there is a quick access option at the top of recent documents you've already viewed. Below are the folders. You can see the two new items we've created are circled.

(Microsoft Word)

1. After saving your file on to your computer, go into Google Drive and select new on the top left

2. Click File Upload

3. Select file from computer > click Upload

Completion download bar will be on the bottom right. To find where the document is, hover mouse over green check mark and click to show where the file is located.

4. Once located, double click the document to open.
